Jed Island in Lower Morgan Bay
WHAT: A 14-acre undeveloped island located in lower Morgan Bay between East Blue Hill and Newbury Neck in Surry. The conservation of Jed Island has been a long-sought objective of BHHT.
WHY: Almost entirely forested with an easily accessible shoreline, the island has a long tradition of local recreational use by boaters, including day trips by small boats and kayaks. It also has important wildlife values: the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has identified the island itself as a bald eagle nesting site and the waters and ledges surrounding it as coastal wading bird and waterfowl habitat. Nearby ledges also host a large harbor seal population.

In addition, Jed Island is a scenic component of the waters of inner Blue Hill Bay and Morgan Bay and can be viewed from various public vantage points on the mainland. The island is near two properties on which our Trust holds conservation easements and Long Island, which is protected with a conservation easement held by Acadia National Park.
HOW MUCH: The purchase price of the island is $750,000 (which is substantially below another purchase offer received by the owners). Maine Coast Heritage Trust, our partner in this project, has secured the opportunity to protect this island through an installment purchase agreement with the owners, who preferred a conservation purchase. Together we must raise $800,000 to cover the payments required by that agreement, as well as long-term stewardship costs.
