Opening of New Trail Section on Blue Hill Mountain
This Friday, August 1st at 4:30 p.m., Blue Hill Heritage Trust invites the public to celebrate the official opening of a new section of the Hayes Trail on Blue Hill Mountain in Blue Hill. Pete Colman, who designed and led the construction of the new trail section, and Erika Rowland, the Trust’s Conservation Lands Manager, will lead a walk to the summit over the new trail. Participants will gather at the bottom of the stone steps, near the kiosk, in the Morse Farm field owned by the Town of Blue Hill opposite the parking lot at the eastern end of the Mountain Road.

This new trail section completes a two part reconstruction project organized by the Trust to repair a highly eroded trail, minimize future erosion and improve the hiking experience. The first phase was completed in 2003 with the construction of the 400 foot set of stone stairs, done with the assistance of many local volunteers and the Maine Conservation Corps. The second phase began last summer with the help of volunteers and a student crew from Landmark Volunteers and involved re- routing the upper section of the trail. The new route provides outstanding views and travels over a hardened surface that will reduce the impact from hikers. The old, heavily eroded section will be closed off to allow it to re-vegetate.
The trail is located on land donated to the Town of Blue Hill in 1977 by Ruth Hayes for conservation purposes. The trail work has been done with the support of the selectmen and with a financial contribution provided by town residents at the 2007 town meeting.
