An Opportunity to Conserve Land on Walker Pond

Many of us know and love Walker Pond. You may have learned how to swim there or caught your first fish. Some of you love Walker Pond best in the winter for its ice-fishing, while others cherish their summer-time memories from camp.

Project Summary:  Blue Hill Heritage Trust has an exciting opportunity to conserve 15 acres on the northern shores of Walker Pond (1,700 feet of shoreline), and we hope you will join us. The property is located next to Camp Winniaugwamauk on the Coastal Road in Brooksville. The current owners would like to see the property conserved by an organization that will honor the scenic beauty and natural history of the area, while maintaining its public access.

Conservation Values
The property features majestic white pine and red oak that have been untouched for decades. There is mixed wildlife habitat, including a 5-acre wetland/forested wetland. There is a trail already in existence on the property. We will slightly upgrade and expand parts of it, all while keeping our impact low on the surrounding wildlife habitat. Once completed, the trail will take you through the forest, along wetlands, and down to the water’s edge. There will be several outlook points where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the special pond.

Additionally, there has been a lot of effort to restore the alewife fish passage from the Bagaduce river into Walker Pond. But that is only part of the puzzle. Conserving shoreline properties helps maintain the integrity of the overall ecosystem.

One way to support a community resource like Walker Pond is to conserve pockets of the shoreline.

Budget and Timeline:
We will be closing on the property in mid-December and hope to complete the fundraising for the project by December 31, 2024.  See below for details about the Project Budget.

Please consider joining us a conservation partner! If we maintain enough of the natural habitat around a pond, we can continue to
support the health of the pond for wildlife and people.
