Blue Hill Heritage Trust is making exciting progress on our Walker Pond property in Brooksville, where work has officially begun on our new trail! Thanks to the hard work of staff, volunteers, and local contractors, the project is already taking shape!
A parking lot has been completed, thanks to local contractor Brandon Hutchins, and Adams Landscaping has brought in fill and stone to help prepare the site. Staff and volunteers have also been hard at work moving rocks, shaping paths, and hauling materials as they make steady progress toward creating a welcoming outdoor experience for visitors.
The project centers on 15 acres along the northern shore of Walker Pond. Located next to Camp Winniaugwamauk on the Coastal Road, the property was conserved to protect the area’s scenic beauty, natural history, and public access for generations to come.
Protecting a Special Place
The Walker Pond property features majestic white pine and red oak trees that have grown undisturbed for decades, along with diverse wildlife habitat, including a five-acre wetland and forested wetland. The trail is being thoughtfully prepared, with a focus on keeping the impact on surrounding wildlife habitat as low as possible.
Once completed, the trail will guide visitors through the forest, alongside wetlands, and down to the water’s edge. Several outlook points will offer opportunities to pause, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and take in the beauty of Walker Pond.
Conserving this property also supports the health of the broader ecosystem. Significant efforts have been made to restore alewife passage from the Bagaduce River into Walker Pond, and protecting the surrounding shoreline is another important piece of maintaining the integrity of this natural system.
A Community Effort
This project would not be possible without the support and hard work of our community. We extend a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated volunteers, donors, and staff who have helped bring this vision to life.
We are excited to see the trail taking shape and look forward to sharing more updates as work continues. Once the improvements are complete, we hope the Walker Pond trail will provide a special place for people to explore, connect with nature, and enjoy the beauty of the Blue Hill Peninsula and Brooksville.
Stay tuned for more updates from Walker Pond!
